Neighborhoods change and can go through many lives; eventually some become only memories. What Remains? is set in the Shueijiaoshe Cultural Park in Tainan, Taiwan. This park has a rich history that includes — beginning with the Japanese colonial era — being a military village that provided a vibrant home and community for 1,100 families. Most of the buildings were leveled a little more than 10 years ago to make room for an upscale residential area, but thanks to the work of local activists, some of this important site avoided destruction. What remains of the more than 5,000 people that once lived here are the vivid cultural memories of the former residents, a few buildings, and some grand old trees.

With this site-specific photo and video installation, we hope to evoke a resonance of the past and to look at the near future of this area. Through interviews with former residents and others, we decided to focus on one building — now called Building C — and the life that it held: a small shop for children from the school across the street, a garden, a home for a family.

We are using the outside of the building to poetically examine and honor what was and what remains. Because we see Building C as a shell of its former life, we were inspired to have people who are passing through the park to experience the building from the outside only, by looking at photographs installed on the building, and peeking through windows into the space.

Location:
Building C, Shueijiaoshe Cultural Park, Tainan, Taiwan

Dates:
August 20–November 21, 2019

Time:
Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm

Opening:
Tuesday, August 20 at 10am

What Remains? is supported in part by Land Salzburg, Taiwan Ministry of Culture, Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government, Siao-long Cultural Park, and Shueijiaoshe Cultural Park.

installation in Salzburg

Anja Hitzenberger’s current exhibition is “Still Life,” on view through the end of November 2015 in the center of Salzburg, Austria, in the display window of Raiffeisenbank (Alter Markt 8). “Still Life” is a new, ongoing series showing carelessly discarded food, left behind on streets and sidewalks — garbage representing things pushed aside and forgotten. These tossed away items tell stories about people, our society, culture and tradition.

Anja will be showing new work in “vollschlank,” a solo exhibition as part of Vienna’s biennial photography festival, “eyes on: Monat der Fotografie”.

The show is in an unusual location: a dentist office in Vienna’s first district! Dr. Hollmann & Dr. Lhotka regularly work with galleries and individual artists to present exhibitions in their offices so that they and their patients have a variety of art to enjoy. It’s the perfect venue to show these photographs of sugary sweets and other food-related themes.

The opening is Thursday, November 13, 2014, at 7pm, with an introduction by Christof Stein, at Dr. Hollmann & Dr. Lhotka OG (Köllnerhofgasse 6, 1010 Wien). The exhibition will run November 14 – February 28, 2015, Mondays–Thursdays, 9am – 6pm.

Andy Biskin Ibid: Act Necessary

Strudelmedia’s latest music release is Act Necessary, the debut CD of Andy Biskin’s new quartet, Ibid. Mashing up everything from polkas and New Orleans jazz to funk and Tin Pan Alley, Biskin shoehorns sophisticated compositional elements into epic miniature tunes. His all-star quartet, featuring cornetist Kirk Knuffke, trombonist Brian Drye, and drummer Jeff Davis, handles each musical hairpin turn with infectious enthusiasm and deep insight into the music’s many subtleties. It’s available now at the strudelmedia store.
